Objectives
1. Describe basics of opioid pain relief mechanisms.
2. Determine reasons for treating acute and chronic pain.
3. Explain the appropriate role of opioids in acute, sub-acute and chronic pain treatment.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of the pathways to development of opioid misuse, opioid dependence and addiction.
5. Demonstrate appropriate use of opioids in pain management for patients with substance abuse disorders or in recovery.
6. Manage patients on long-term opioid treatment and how to taper opioids.
7. Describe regulatory and Virginia laws regarding oversight of opioid replacement treatment.
