Reference materials (including indexes, theses/dissertations and special collections) and current journal issues do not circulate. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.
All library borrowers are responsible for the safety and prompt return of items checked out in their names.
Students may request that circulating materials be held when they are returned. Holds may not be placed on reserve materials. Items needed urgently may be recalled and must be returned immediately. Students may request that books or journals be pulled and placed on the hold shelf. A maximum of five requests at one time will be taken per individual. Materials will be held for seven working days. If not picked up within that time, they will be returned to the collection and will not be pulled a second time. Such requests are handled at no charge on a limited basis.
Materials may be renewed at the Circulation Desk or by phone unless a hold request has been filed. A maximum of three renewals is allowed.
All library borrowers are responsible for the safe and prompt return of items checked out in their names. To ensure proper credit for returning library materials, students should return them through the book drop at the circulation desk. It is requested that materials not be left on the top of the circulation desk. If the circulation service desk is closed, students should return books and journals through the book drop located in the wall outside the front door of the library. AVs, CDs, videos, AV equipment, and laptop computers should be returned only the circulation desk. Students are responsible for damage to these fragile items.
Those who have overdue library materials are subject to lose their borrowing privileges. Borrowers who lose or otherwise fail to return library materials are liable for replacement cost plus a $10 processing fee.
Fines are charged for overdue reserve materials, as follows:
Courtesy and subscription clients, as well as EVMS associates, may request electronic delivery of articles from journals that EVMS owns through ILLiad, our document delivery system. Documents are provided at a cost of 15 cents per page, billable to the account you designate.
The library will send and receive faxes for students. Outgoing local calls are free, but there is a $1.00 charge for long distance faxes. All incoming faxes must have an accompanying cover sheet.
The VIVA Cooperative Borrowing Program allows students, faculty and staff at Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) institutions to borrow materials on-site from any participating library. Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University does not participate in VIVA's Cooperative Borrowing Program, but many state-supported universities in the area do participate.
Students, faculty and staff may borrow materials on-site from the following institutions:
Borrowers must present a valid form of photo identification, such as an institutional ID, as well as proof of current status in order to borrow materials. Lending libraries use the universal borrowing current status webpage to confirm status.
Students who wish to borrow on-site from other colleges and universities in the area will need a Virginia Tidewater Consortium card, which is available at the EVMS library's Circulation Desk.
The Virginia Tidewater Consortium for Higher Education (VTC) serves as the major vehicle for regional cooperation among institutions of higher education and affiliated agencies. Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University faculty, staff and students who want to borrow materials from VTC libraries need to visit the Edward E. Brickell Medical Sciences Library circulation desk to obtain a VTC card. Graduate students at member institutions (see full list below) need to request a card through their institution before coming to check out materials at a Brock Virginia Health Sciences library. A consortium card is good for one semester for students and staff and for the fiscal year for faculty. You will need to apply for a new card when the old one expires.
The VTC card allows the recipient to apply for library privileges at other VTC libraries, subject to the rules, regulations and any restrictions on status of the lending library. The extent of privileges is determined by the policies of the lending library, which vary from institution to institution. You will need your consortium card and a picture ID when you apply for privileges at a VTC library.
Review VTC library circulation policies and online catalogs.
If you primarily wish to borrow materials from Norfolk State University or the College of William & Mary, please check out the Virtual Library of Virginia Cooperative Borrowing Program.
