As one of the only medical schools in the nation founded by a grassroots effort from the local community, EVMS is committed to service. We aim to address our community’s most pressing health needs through our educational, research, and clinical programs. Community Health Initiatives
EVMS’ community health initiatives include Every Woman’s Life, Eastern Virginia Area Health Education Center, and Loving Steps – A Virginia Healthy Start Initiative.
HOPES Free Clinic
HOPES is the only free clinic in Norfolk and the first student-run free clinic in Virginia. Its mission is to provide sustainable healthcare services to underserved Norfolk and Portsmouth residents while promoting a unique learning experience for members of the EVMS community.
EVMS Magazine
Published three times a year, The EVMS Magazine is intended for a wide audience, including the general public as well as faculty, staff, residents and students.

This handout is a quick guide to evaluating and using resources on consumer health-related topics.
Plain Speak for Patients, Parents, and Caregivers: A Guide to Common Medical Terms (Booklet)
This booklet contains plain language, alternate explanations for words that are common in many medical settings. It isn’t a comprehensive list but includes terms frequently heard during conversations with healthcare providers or presentations on hospital rounds that may be most confusing to those not familiar with medical terminology. It contains a link to our Consumer Health guide as well as a list of consumer health resources from the NLM and other organizations.
